An air-injection iron, sulfur and manganese filter for private wells, sold direct. Strong on the problems it is built for, honest about needing a water test, and weaker on independent certification and returns.

The short verdict

  • Good fit if a lab test shows iron up to 7 ppm, hydrogen sulfide up to 8 ppm and/or manganese up to 1 ppm, pH 6.5–10, and no bacteria problem (or you add disinfection).1
  • Not a fit for bacteria on its own, nitrate, arsenic, or water outside those limits.
  • Watch out: no NSF listing found, and installed systems can only be returned if defective.3, 4
  • Water tested before it ships1 System refunded if it doesn't fit; the test isn't
  • Lifetime limited warranty1, 5 Valves and fittings; mineral tanks 14″+ 10 yrs; head 5–7 yrs Valves & fittings; tanks 14″+ 10 yrs
  • DIY install keeps the warranty6 Or hire a plumber: the warranty applies either way

What it is and how it works

The Whole House Well Water Filter System uses air injection oxidation: a pocket of air in the tank oxidizes dissolved iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide so that a greensand-based media can filter them out. The system then backwashes itself. SpringWell describes it as "chemical-free".1 This is the same principle that extension services describe as oxidation followed by filtration.8

It needs a power outlet (not on a switch) and a drain line; the manual includes a 50-foot drain line and sets the controller up through a phone app.9 There are no filter cartridges to change in the iron filter itself; SpringWell states a "10+ year media life".1

How an air-injection iron filter works Well water enters the top of the tank, passes an air pocket that oxidizes dissolved iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide into particles, the media bed traps them, and clean water leaves at the bottom. A backwash flushes the trapped particles to a drain and refreshes the air pocket. IN valve 1 2 3 air rust media OUT drain
  1. Air pocket. Oxygen at the top of the tank turns dissolved iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide into particles.
  2. Particles form. What was invisible in the water becomes rust-colored specks.
  3. Media bed traps them. Clean water leaves the bottom; a scheduled backwash flushes the particles to the drain and refreshes the air.

"Do not use where water is microbiologically unsafe!"

SpringWell's own note on the product page.1 The warranty is void if the system is installed on water outside the recommended specification,5 one more reason to test first.

For a home with peak demand above 12 GPM (Nebraska Extension puts a 3-bedroom, 2-bath home at 12 GPM and a 4-bedroom, 3-bath home at 16 GPM10), the WS4 is the safer size.

Certification: claims, not listings

The iron, sulfur and manganese figures are SpringWell's own claims. The product page names no NSF, WQA or IAPMO certification for the system, and NSF's public database showed "No Matching Products Found" for SpringWell.1, 4 That doesn't mean the system doesn't work; oxidation filtration is an established method. It means no independent body has listed this model's performance. (We couldn't search the WQA and IAPMO directories.)

How ordering works

No lab report needed. The test is part of the order.

  1. Order with the $134.25 test

    SpringWell adds its lab test to the same checkout.1

  2. SpringWell reviews your results

    The order waits for the lab results. If changes are needed, SpringWell contacts you.1, 3

  3. It ships, or the system is refunded

    If it doesn't fit your water, the order is cancelled and the system refunded. The test isn't.1

SpringWell doesn't ship a well system until it has seen a water test. You can buy its mail-in lab test ("Level 1 + Bacteria", 53+ contaminants, $134.25 on sale) or send your own current results. If the results show the system isn't compatible, SpringWell cancels the order and refunds it; the test itself isn't refundable.1, 2, 3 A state-certified lab test works too and often costs less.

Bacteria: the UV add-on

The iron filter does nothing against bacteria. SpringWell sells a UV system as an add-on and claims it "kills 99.9% of bacteria and viruses".12 We found no NSF/ANSI 55 listing for it.4 Extension guidance for wells with bacteria is to find and fix the source first;13 Ohio's health department accepts only UV certified to NSF/ANSI 55 Class A for primary disinfection.19

The UV also needs clean water to work, so it goes after the iron filter (and a softener, if your water is hard).

Hard water and the salt-free option

If your water is hard, SpringWell offers the filter with a salt-based softener or with its salt-free FutureSoft conditioner. Note that FutureSoft tolerates no iron, manganese or hydrogen sulfide at all and needs pH 7.0–9.5,15 so it only works with the iron filter in front of it. A salt-free conditioner reduces scale buildup; it doesn't soften water.

Installation

SpringWell says DIY installation keeps the warranty.6 You'll need to cut into the main line, run a drain line and provide an outlet; the manual lists supplies such as a bypass, connectors and a shut-off valve that aren't in the box.9 If you're not comfortable with that, budget for a plumber.

  • Cut into the main line where the water enters the house
  • Run a drain line for the backwash
  • Provide an outlet for the control head
  • Buy the extras: bypass, connectors and a shut-off valve aren't in the box9

"Lifetime warranty"

Lifetime cover against defects on fittings, housings, valves and in/out heads; retention and mineral tanks 14″ or larger get 10 years; electronic heads get 7 years on the warranty page but 5 years on product pages.1, 5 The UV unit's manual gives 10 years on the reactor, 3 years on electronics and 1 year on lamps.14

The warranty is void if the system is moved or installed on water outside the specification, and filters or media not replaced on time count as "neglect", which it doesn't cover.5

"6-month money-back guarantee"

The return policy accepts only unused, uninstalled items in undamaged packaging, with a 10% restocking fee, and you pay return shipping. "Installed systems are not eligible for return unless determined defective".3

One FAQ on SpringWell's site still promises a "full, 100% refund";6 the written policy is what counts.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Consider it if

  • a lab test shows iron, sulfur and/or manganese within its limits;
  • you want no cartridges and no chemicals for the iron stage;
  • you have power and a drain near the well line.

Look elsewhere if

  • you need independently certified performance;
  • your main problem is bacteria, nitrate or arsenic;
  • your iron is above 7 ppm or your pH is below 6.5;
  • you want the option to return an installed system.

Our verdict

A strong iron, sulfur and manganese filter, if your test fits

Built for iron, sulfur and manganese, and SpringWell checks your water before it ships. The catches: no NSF listing found, and an installed system goes back only if defective.1, 3, 4
