Not an iron filter. About $274 a year in filters and lamp.1, 3, 16, 18, 19

A carbon-based whole-house filter with a UV stage, for smaller homes on wells whose water doesn't have an iron or sulfur problem. Easy returns, but regular filter changes and a UV certified only for supplemental use.

The short verdict

  • Good fit for homes with up to 2.5 bathrooms and 4 people that want carbon filtration (taste, odor, chemicals) plus a UV safeguard, on water that is already low in iron, manganese and hardness.1
  • Not a fit for iron (Aquasana says you "may need a specialized filter"), manganese above its UV limit, or as the only treatment for a well that tests positive for bacteria.3, 5, 9
  • Plus: a 90-day money-back guarantee: a full refund of the purchase price (not shipping).2
  • 90-day returns2 Full refund of the purchase price
  • 5 years or 500,000 gallons6, 9 System warranty; UV chamber 10 years
  • UV listed by NSF5, 7 NSF/ANSI 55 Class B: a safeguard, not for disinfecting unsafe water Class B: not for unsafe water
  • No drain line1, 9 The UV needs a grounded outlet

What it is

The Rhino Well Water with UV combines a 20-inch pre-filter, an upflow tank with KDF and activated carbon, a post-filter and a UV unit. It needs no drain line ("No drain lines or back flushing required"); the UV needs a grounded outlet.1, 8, 9 Aquasana rates the tank for 5 years or 500,000 gallons.1

Certification: what's listed and what's only tested

Class B systems are for supplemental treatment of non-harmful "nuisance" microorganisms. They are "not intended for the disinfection of microbiologically unsafe water".5, 11 For primary disinfection, Ohio's health department accepts only Class A UV.5

The product page lists 78 contaminants reduced by Aquasana's Claryum technology.1 Aquasana's certified-products page lists those certifications for its under-sink and countertop units, not for any Rhino system.12

  • Brand claimFilter tank: "independently tested"No certifier named8, 12

Iron, manganese and sulfur: not what it's for

Aquasana doesn't sell a dedicated iron or sulfur filter. Its own FAQ says: "If you have iron in your water, you may need a specialized filter to tackle the problem",3 and the warranty excludes failures "due to iron or sediment build-up".6

If your test shows iron or rotten-egg smell, look at an oxidation filter such as the SpringWell WS or a local installer.

Warranty and returns

The terms as written, with their exclusions.

Warranty

5 years or 500,000 gallons on the system; 12 months on the installation kit and filter housings; the UV unit 10 years on the chamber, 3 years on electronics, 1 year on lamps.6, 9 Exclusions include iron or sediment build-up and not replacing the pre-filter.6

90-day guarantee

A full refund of the purchase price (not shipping) if you return the whole system within 90 days of the order. You pay return shipping, and installation labor isn't covered.2, 15

Installation

Aquasana "strongly recommend[s] hiring a licensed plumber".3 The kit includes Schedule 80 PVC parts and valves; you need primer, glue and plumber's tape, and metal plumbing needs two grounding clamps and #4 copper wire.1, 8 Install it on the cold line, indoors and out of the sun.

Hard water

The Rhino Well doesn't soften water. Aquasana offers its SimplySoft salt-based softener, which the brand says is IAPMO certified to NSF/ANSI 44 for hardness reduction.13 It handles ferrous iron only up to 1 ppm and needs pH 6.5 or higher.14

No test required, but do one

Aquasana doesn't require a water test before you buy. Given the limits above, a lab test is the only way to know whether this system fits your well.

How to test your well

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Consider it if

  • your test shows low iron, manganese and hardness, and no bacteria;
  • you want carbon filtration for taste, odor and chemicals, plus a UV safeguard;
  • your home has up to 2.5 bathrooms;
  • an easy return within 90 days matters to you.

Look elsewhere if

  • you have iron, manganese or sulfur smell;
  • your well tests positive for coliform or E. coli (fix the source, then use Class A disinfection);
  • you have a large home or high peak demand;
  • you don't want to change filters every few months.

Our verdict

A good carbon + UV filter for clean, low-iron well water

For smaller homes whose test shows no iron or bacteria problem, with a 90-day money-back guarantee. Not an iron filter, and its UV is a safeguard, not for disinfecting unsafe water.2, 3, 5
